Extreme heat and raging bushfires have swept through the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a major heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

These conditions come after recent bushfires in New South Wales, which resulted in the destruction of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in areas within South Australia and New South Wales, as a system of high pressure shifts to the east, delivering intense sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of tinder-dry vegetation and relentless heat presents a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into darkness last week after powerful gusts compromised the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The stormy weather also caused major transport delays at a key airport, where numerous flights were grounded. Severe impact on power systems is anticipated to create further issues as utility companies work urgently to reconnect electricity to over 1 million residents.

Unusual Fog Covers Typically Clear Area

Meanwhile, a region known for its sunny weather and abundant sunlight has experienced one of its dullest and foggiest periods on record. A specific type of fog, which typically lingers for only a short time, has been remarkably extensive and long-lasting this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by unprecedented autumn precipitation that left soils saturated.
