New Year's Partygoers Told to Dress Warmly with Snow Predicted Across the UK
Meteorologists are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation expected throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Festive Events Continue In Spite of Alerts
Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are expected to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This proceeds amid advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be needed," noted the weather service.
Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is set to be perfect for fireworks shows, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Temperatures are due to be low, so additional clothing essential, according to forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- People are advised to leave additional time for trips on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.
The Mercury Forecast to Plummet Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are expected to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Released
At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency said this meant the weather was expected to lead to major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
The message for all is clear: to welcome the new year in safely, dressing for the cold is utterly essential.
