The acclaimed police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh season, confirmed by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar added, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season begins with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of criminal networks, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor described being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The conclusion of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
